About the Hutmacher Homestead.

Standing alone in the open prairie of western North Dakota the Hutmacher stands as an authentic example of typical homestead era family farm.

The peacefulness of the surroundings allows one to drift back in time when life was simpler but more a matter of survival. The remote location lends itself to imagining what it might have been like for Valentine Hutmacher and his family to arrive at this site with nothing around but the open prairie and the effort it would have taken to build a house out of the available clay and stone.

The site is dedicated to the memory of a generation of immigrants who came to the open prairie, endured hardships and made sacrifices to build a better life for their children and grandchildren. Their example left a living legacy for future generations.
